In the wake of aftershocks from the Napa Valley earthquake I was talking with one of my best friends on the phone about how the 'after shocks' is where the 'damage' can happen. Just like in life- we may feel the 'event' much more strongly in the wake of what happens after the death, the divorce, the casting-out. During the 1989 Loma Prieta quake I was at work on Sutter street. It felt like the long narrow room was a cigar box held in someone's hands shaking back and forth. (8-15 seconds according to reports) of violent shaking. After it stopped we rushed out to the street. Gene Hackman was standing there and in a California moment - a quick laugh and 'maybe this was for a movie' went through the crowd. But we knew that wasn't true.
Once your body has been shaken by a quake over 6.0 - you never forget the sensation. We walked around for days afterwards in AWE and WONDER and JOY at being alive. Survivors - with a sense of openness and connection. Not in the beaten down sense of 'surviving' - but 'I'M ALIVE and so are YOU' - let's LIVE. It took down our defenses. We saw the earth crack open and out of that crack came death and life.
I woke up this morning thinking about Pandora. Symbolically she is known as "The One Who Gives All Gifts" and "Mother of" or "Releaser" of "All Troubles". Then I started thinking about Persephone and the Persephone headline. And what I perceive to be the white-washed story of Persephone. Luanne Simmons of Goddess on Purpose and I will be talking about this during the Brouhaha - Causing A Disturbance Festival.
If there was a Pandora line in the hands- I can't help but think it would run from Venus through Mars and then veer over into Mercury. Certain lines in the hands (to me) feel like earthquakes- they crack open the areas around them. And once those areas are cracked open- you may be able to 'glue them back together' or stitch them together*- but why would you want to? Once we decide to bring everything out into the open- we are going to have to be strong and flexible enough to roll with the OPENING under our feet.
Beauty + Courage + Curiosity = Trouble. At least in many of the myths and bible stories. Does that describe you? Raw Beauty as I see it is an alchemical element that may or may not be 'pleasing' to the eye. It stirs things up-and you know where this is going. We are going to be opening a "Pandora's Jar" at the Brouhaha - Causing a Disturbance- Festival tm
"The One Who Gives All Gifts" is such a rich title. Sounds good to some people at first glance until they start to realize that may include death, illness, break-ups. Make a list of the gifts you were given. Most of you I would guess have CURIOSITY on that list. Can't help but wonder if all the 'brouhaha' about Mercury Rx is because when we are out of our 'normal minds' - there's great potential to get curious. Shirley MacLaine asked "What if curiosity is the original sin?" You can't really 'get in trouble' without a dose of curiosity- and who is say that 'curiosity' = 'trouble' = 'bad' ? Well my mothers and the nuns at my school sure did.
Curious = cura= cure. What is your curiosity here to 'cure' ? When we are curious- there is something brewing within us. It was okay to be curious about certain things for some of us like "How does a _____ work?" but not about "Why does that water in Uncle Frank's cup smell like alcohol?"
In the deeper meaning of opening that box/jar - we can see that any so-called 'evil' can not be kept in a box. And the one who 'opens the lid' can get blamed for 'exposing' or 'bringing to light' what was already there.
I had a reading the other day- and the person reading for me said to me "You don't have to contain this energy" It took awhile for all the meanings of that statement to reveal themselves. If I am this 'strong energy' - how can I not contain it? I finally got that just like a water container or pitcher - I am holding that water and I am pouring it out- through words, images, conversation etc and that's what I will be doing at Brouhaha Festival - Causing a Disturbance. Gathering together a group of people who cause a disturbance with their presence, with their words, with their actions- with their art and with what they create.
There are still a few all access festival passes left. Heather Bleasdell Celebrity Witch tm will be offering a workshop "Bite It- Getting to the Core of Magic" as well as leading a Rocktober Sabbath Ritual. Individual workshops will cost between $47-$197. When you purchase an all access pass - you will be gaining access to 10 workshops for $297 !!! You will receive recordings of each workshop- so no need to be fretting about not having time to come to 10 workshops in 14 days. I recommend a full immersion because we want to be in position to start 2015 strong. It is going to be a whirlwind year. These last months of 2014- are indeed the calm before the storm.
There's that old saying "The Calm Before the Storm" - which is true I feel before our DEEPEST moments of PROFOUND knowing. And that knowing is undeniable because of the calmness that accompanied it. It may in the next seconds cause 'all hell to break loose' - but we needed the calm to ALLOW us to hear/feel/see what we had been trying to avoid.
And I find the opposite 'true' as well. "The Storm Before the Calm". The air felt totally different after that earthquake. Stiller than I had ever felt or noticed. My breathing changed. The same way it did when I survived a car crash. The impact of that crash and of gasoline (from the tanker truck spilling all over the car window and freeway) gave me a moment of 'thinking' I was dead. Yet - the overwhelming smell of gasoline and the patterns it was making on the windshield let me know I was alive.
I love 'odd' smells. Smells wake me up in a way that most things don't. I have fallen in love with someone because of how they smell. And the smell has always had a hint of 'danger' in it. Imagine my delight when I read "Earthy Delights" in the September issue of Allure magazine. Nancy Hass says "For a fragrance to seduce- and endure- it must have a touch of something rotten at its core." Frederic Malle says "There is a rejection of perfume as something to cover your animal nature ..."
How magnificent to embrace our animal nature- and we'll be doing just that during the Brouhaha Festival. I love getting dirty, sweaty, funky- we'll be doing the kind of magic that uses the root + 2nd- so be prepared to get messy!
As Christopher Brosius owner of CBIHatePerfume says "For a scent to be touching and profound, it needs to have something awful, something ugly. Otherwise it's just pretty, and that's incredibly boring." (You know that is I what I say about the 'love and light' credo)
Awful and ugly are not the ingredients that everyone wants to have in their business or in their life. But they sing to me because there is nothing more damaging than that which we refuse to look at/own. I'd rather be polarizing than be boring.
Seed contains the word SEE and if we refuse to 'see' what we perceive to be ugly or awful- we may have a life that looks pretty on the outside- but people will pick up the scent of decay - of what has died- that we are refusing to acknowledge.
If you are not ready to move past 'love and light' and 'letting go' and 'denying your desires - well you probably wouldn't be on my mailing list. But if you are here and you're not ready and/or willing to move past those things this definitely is not the festival for you!!!
If it is- you can purchase your All-Acess Pass here
I'll be getting Scent-sual on the calls leading up to Brouhaha.
As we lead into the Dark of the Moon- make a list of the gifts you were given and make a list of gifts you received from/in unexpected places. Which gifts are you most focused on? Which gifts have been trying to get your attention? Have you not only been paying attention to them- are you using them? What is your action plan from now until the end of the year? So many of you have a book inside you- can we make a plan to get those books out into the world - in some form before 2016?
I will be in Hawaii - first time ever !- and will be bringing the All Access Pass holders with me into an intense Shamanic Workshop. Can't wait to see what emerges from that time and I will be bringing it to Brouhaha !!!
Just over 6 weeks until the fest !!!
Expansively Yours, Denise
p.s. Did you ever stop to think about Inquisitive and Inquisition and how the people (historically) who were curious often became targets - if not killed? I love the dual meaning of curious. How many times have you been estranged because of being 'strange' ? What is the strangest thing about you?
p.p.s. - Can't help but wonder if all the 'brouhaha' about Mercury Rx is because when we are out of our 'normal minds' - there's great potential to get curious. Curious is provocative, dangerous and potentially threatening to our way of life as we or the ones around us are used to living. This is exactly why I scheduled the Brouhaha Festival during Mercury Rx.
* read an article awhile back where some women in Asia were having plastic surgery to change the lines in their hands !!! Wow! We can change these lines by changing our thinking and our behavior.
